Apple and Google introducing new photo transfer tool

As members of the Data Transfer Initiative (DTI) , Apple and Google are introducing a new data transfer tool this week.

The tool will allow Google Photos users to transfer their collections to iCloud directly. This is inclusive of photos and videos, adding to the existing transfers that were initially possible from iCloud to Google Photos.

The offering from Apple and Google is powered by the open source Data Transfer Project (DTP) technology stack. The tool joins existing direct portability tools available to billions today offered by the likes of Apple, Google, and Meta.

The change comes from how valuable portability is in the digital age. People expect this from apps and services used daily. With this development, more attention has been directed to engineering and design to keep a person’s data intact.

The DTP aligns data models, authentication means, and other elements. Tools powered by this reflect the collective vision of the DTI for the future of data portability.

Interested readers may look into this on support pages from Apple and Google.
