Micron on Tuesday has officially announced the world’s first 1.5 terabyte industrial-grade microSD called ‘i400’ at the Embedded World 2022 conference in Nuremberg, Germany.

The i400 microSD lineup is manufactured on Micron’s 176-layer 3D NAND process (similar tech used in SSDs) with focus on endurance and performance. It will primarily cater the enterprise market as a storage device for video security surveillance.

Micron claims the i400 is designed to handle five years worth of continuous 24-7 high quality recording, and boasts over two million hours of mean time between failures (MTBF), which means it is highly-sustainable (i.e., the card might even surpass the life shelf of the device it is used for).

The i400 microSD will have capacities ranging from 64GB, 256GB to 1TB, and of course, the maxed out 1.5TB which is 50% larger than Micron’s previous champion, C200.

As compared to SanDisk’s first 1TB microSD released in 2019, it had a price tag of USD 450. Micron has not specified its pricing and availability yet, though we can expect the 1.5TB i400 microSD to tag an expensive price point and sourcing it will be tough, given the supply chain plight.
