DITO Telecommunity Corp. plans on testing a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite for their connection in rural areas.

DITO, one of the mobile networks in the Philippines, has signed a deal to pilot-test a LEO satellite. This was signed with OneWeb Network Access Associates Limited, a broadband satellite communications company in London.

DITO Chief Technology Officer Rodolfo D. Santiago has stated that this will benefit Autonomous regions in Mindanao, Sulu, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi.

DITO has mentioned that they are talking to other satellite companies and their offers. One type of satellite is an Earth-orbiting or geostationary satellite, which is positioned at an altitude of roughly 35,800 km. In contrast, a LEO satellite is typically positioned at an altitude of about 1,000 km.

There are currently 648 satellites in OneWeb, arranged in 12 coordinated orbital planes 1,200 km above the planet.
