Google has announced a brand-new image fact-checking capability for its Fact Check Explorer service as part of a deeper commitment to battling false information and assisting fact-checking groups. The new version intends to provide internet users even more authority as they work to counter the very real risk posed by fake news.

The new image search function in Fact Check Explorer, which was previously exclusively accessible for text searches, solves the difficulties fact checkers experience when confirming photographs. Fake or manipulated images are a persistent threat especially in the Philippines as 51% of the population find it difficult to distinguish false information. Reporters, scholars, researchers, and even concerned online users can upload or send a link of an image to verify if it is previously fact-checked.

The new search function, which is currently available in a global beta version, makes it possible for fact-checkers to comprehend the historical context and history of an image. Researchers can now follow an image’s initial Google indexing date and subsequent usage history using this upgraded feature. This feature enables fact checkers to evaluate the accuracy of images and their context to successfully battle harmful disinformation by giving them useful insights into an image’s history.

One of Google’s most recent efforts to thwart bogus news online is Fact Check Explorer. Furthermore, Google and YouTube rrevealed a groundbreaking $13.2-million grant to the International Fact-Checking Network to launch the Global Fact Check Fund, which aims to aid fact-checking organizations everywhere.
