After the sudden popularity and success of AI-bot ChatGPT, Google has now gone all-in with artificial intelligence (AI) as well, with the company launching two new AI features for its Google Workspace suite of apps.

In a blog post posted today, Google announced that Google Docs and Gmail will be the first of its suite of apps to receive the AI treatment.

In particular, two features will now be available for Docs and Gmail centered around what Google calls “generative AI.”

To help users get started writing, Google has now embedded generative AI in Docs and Gmail. With the AI, users will now be able to type any topic on the page and the AI partner will instantly generate a draft on that particular subject.

Google says this AI feature will help users save “time and effort of writing that first version” and can serve as a collaborative AI partner to further refine and edit your output.

Aside from being able to generate a draft for users, Google’s AI partner can also now rewrite your text to convert it into a particular tone or writing style.

Google says this can be used for users who want to polish their text in a tone appropriate for applying for a new job or writing to a new supplier for those who work in traditional industries.

You’ll also be able to convert bullet points or notes (from a meeting for example) and ask Google’s AI to convert them to a summary that can be shared with other users.

At the end of the announcement, Google reiterated that while AI can be helpful, it is not a “replacement for the ingenuity, creativity, and smarts of real people.” It shared that all its products will be in accordance with Google’s AI Principles, which you can read here.
