Google parent company Alphabet Inc. has just announced that it will cut around 12,000 jobs or more than 6% of its global workforce.
The news broke after Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai sent an email to Google employees informing them of the 12,000 reduction in their workforce.
According to Pichai, the company had hired to “match and fuel” the “dramatic growth” it had experienced over the past two years.
However, Pichai said that they had hired for “a different economic reality than the one we face today.”
The massive layoff at one of the largest technology companies in the world is only one of a slew of job cuts happening in the tech industry today.
Earlier, we reported that software and hardware company Microsoft will also be laying off around 10,000 employees worldwide due to lower customer spending amid the pandemic.
