TikTok is now one of the world’s most known social media platforms. It also accidentally gained a reputation as one of the top platforms for music discovery. Now, it has been exposed by Insider that the parent company of TikTok – ByteDance – has patent filings regarding a TikTok Music app.
ByteDance filed last May 2022 a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for “TikTok Music”. Based on their filing, TikTok Music will let users buy, play, share and download music. It’ll also enable users to create their own playlist, share it or recommend it, comment on music or do a livestream audio and video. Surprisingly, ByteDance already filed a trademark for ‘TikTok Music’ in Australia last November 2021.
There’s no direct information from ByteDance if this is a confirmed app to compete with Spotify and Apple but based on the features from the trademark filing, a challenge to these 2 apps is imminent. Some of these features have already been done by ByteDance through their own music streaming app called Resso which was launched in India Brazil and Indonesia last 2020.
In Brazil, ByteDance created a button in their TikTok app so their users will be redirected to their Russo app if they want to listen to the full version of the music they’re interested in.
TikTok is undoubtedly making a hit globally because of its features which is now forcing other social media to adapt so they can keep up with the pacing of TikTok.
